Indian ConnectionOct. 6, 2009
Just concluded an a very enjoyable and informative visit with Suhendra Varma, a highly regarded elephant researcher based in Bangalore, India. Not only is Varma an amazing source of knowledge and experience, he is also great company. Inbetween lengthy discussions of elephant conservation and welfare we had time to explore Lasqueti Island and it's surrounding waters.
Many of our talks focussed on the best approaches to beginning a project in Thailand and we agreed that the area that needs more attention is assessing wild elephant populations in Thailand and securing habitat for them. Varma was adament that one of the best ways for an NGO to be effect is to "adopt" a region and learn about it's idiosyncracies from the people living there. With that knowledge one can then foster a good relationship with the local authorities to produce results.
Elephant Enigma - fabulous openingMay 09, 2009
I must say, I was a bit overwhelmed by the opening of my ELEPHANT ENIGMA exhibit. Just days before I was having doubts if the installations would be finished in time, how we would hang them, etc. etc... and if it would all work. Now this amazing response from so many people who came for the opening: we counted approximately 200 - many made a long journey to be there. I can't thank everyone enough for being such a great, receptive crowd and for being part of a new beginning. Surely this is a good omen for our Elephant Earth Initiative.

Someone has also posted a video of the opening on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyJHm6ATAmM
The exhibit is showing until June 1st.

I would like to give special thanks to Tara Williams, our brilliant designer who shared the vision and was crucial in its realization. I am also deeply indebted to Alison Trembath of Dales Gallery who provided the lovely exhibition space and who had the faith and courage to say yes when I initially pitched a vague idea of this project. Terry Zlot of Loupe Imaging used his exacting standards and professionalism to best effect. Balazs Bagi enthusiastically coded this site in record time. Thanks also to great friends Peter Campbell and Paul Clark for helping to get it all together. And of course, to Maria for her endless love and support (and for the work on the copy).
Elephant Enigma - info/art showMay 07, 2009
This upcoming show is much more than a typical photo exhibit with matted and framed images. I'm trying to push the envelope by using installations, text and artefacts. The idea is to convey the awe one experiences when close up to an elephant and also to give viewers an idea of the complexities of our relationship with this majestic animal.
Putting this show together is proving to be a challenging but exciting path. Attempting to bend aspirations and concepts into what is technically feasible is time consuming and at times frustrating but I hope it will pay off and people will affected by the final result. Until then there is much more work to do, so I'll sign off. - Dag (Apr. 29)
